This is a rare case - maybe one every other week or so. THats why didnt include it in the first post.

Sometimes the word is right there in front of you - you take the last few letters of a word in the clue and the first few of the next word .. and you have the answer.

The key to solving that clue is the indicator word "point". This refers to a point on the compass. So it could be N,S,E or W.

So ........

Declares - Straight clue

A piece of poetry = A VERSE

lacks point = A VERSE minue the E

= AVERS.

1D is not casters - its COSSETS. I did not try to explain this one - couldnt. COSSETS are a kind of pet .. but the whole lettuce going down thingy was strange. :D

Oh .. got it ... some research (thanks wiki) .. shows that COS is a kind of lettuce .. so COS and SETS ... almost impossible to come up with :D
