Three jawans detained for alleged 'links with LeT commander'
Srinagar, July 26: Three soldiers and two policemen have been detained for alleged links to LeT blamed for numerous bombings in India, including this month's Mumbai train blasts, officials said on Wednesday.
The news came as violence continued in J&K, with two soldiers, one police officer and a suspected militant killed in two separate gunbattles, officials said.
Authorities picked up two soldiers in Jammu and questioned them about their suspected ties to a field commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba, Army spokesman Col D K Badola said.
A third soldier also was taken into custody by the army, but details were not immediately available, said Col S K Sakhuja, another army spokesman.
If the allegations are true, it would be the first reported infiltration of the Indian military by any of the dozen or more militant groups.
The two state policemen - identified as Mohammad Sikander and Kabir Ahmed-were also detained in Kashmir over alleged links with the militants, said Gopal Sharma, the state's police chief, adding that there have been previous cases of police working with militants.
The names of all the soldiers and police came up in recent interrogations of alleged Lashkar militants caught by security forces, he said.
An Indian intelligence official in Jammu said the soldiers were suspected of transporting weapons for the militants and buying SIM cards for the insurgents' mobile phones. The official asked not to be identified because the investigation is ongoing.
Two of the soldiers - enlisted men identified as M Sharief and M Shakeel - had earlier served as part of a counterinsurgency force in Kashmir, and are still stationed in the region, Badola said.
They are from Kashmir's Punch district, an area near the Line of Control, a local Lashkar commander, he said.
The army didn't provide details of the third detained soldier.
Lashkar is widely believed to have had a role in several bombings in Indian cities, including last year's blasts in New Delhi, which killed 62 people, and the July 11 train bombings in Mumbai, which killed 207 people.
Meanwhile, militants killed two soldiers and one policeman on Wednesday after security forces tried to ambush them in their hide-out in Ranipura, a village 70 kilometers (45 miles) south of Srinagar, said Imtiaz Hussain, a police officer.
Separately, the army and police killed one suspected militant hiding in a house in Akigam, a village nearly 75 kilometers (45 miles) south of Srinagar, said police officer S. Pani. Another suspected militant escaped during the gunbattle.

BJP reacts strongly
Press Trust of India

New Delhi, July 26: The main Opposition BJP accused the government of enabling 'jehadi' infiltration in the armed forces by carrying out what it called a special recruitment drive for minorities.
Party's deputy leader in Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra charged the government with lifting surveillance on madrassas suspected of holding 'jehadi' classes.
"There have been reports of let's infiltration into the Indian Air Force and about terrorists joining the Indian Army. These things have happened because the government has given a go-ahead to jehadis to join the armed forces by allowing recruitment drive for minorities in military," Malhotra told reporters.
He alleged that Union Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal himself has spoken about such a drive.
The BJP leader also flayed Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil for his "clean chit" to madrassas, alleging such a move aimed at lifting surveillance on Islamic schools suspected of carrying out anti-India activities.
"There is no surveillance in madrassas along Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh borders today, which is a matter of serious concern," he said.
Malhotra, who accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of backing out from his earlier strong statements on Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai train bombings, also repeated his party's "hot pursuit" suggestion to the government to deal with terrorism.
"We are ready to support the government if it is ready to destroy cross-border terror camps. But we cannot support it on its vote-driven soft approach on terrorism," he said.

I really appreciate and applaud your attempts to defend Islam and I am saying this seriously. I think you were born in the wrong religion. A good soul lost to the dark side.
As for Muslims in the miltary.. Remember that marine in US army who thew grenades into the camp/tents of the sleeping US marines during start of the current Iraq war? He was a Muslim and he did it as he felt his 'Muslim brethren' were being persecuted!!
So whether US army or Indian army, the Muslims should always be looked upon with suspicion and if possible, never recruited. Our 'secular' policies are now here to bite us in the ass and I think we deserve such treason!

'No check on Muslim soldiers' background'
By: M K Tayal
July 27, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Indian Army is unlikely to re-check the antecedents of the 10,000 Muslims, serving its four regiments in Jammu and Kashmir, even after three soldiers admitted to providing logistics support to terror outfit, Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The trio, Sepoy Abdul Haq, Lance Naik Mohammad Shakeel and Naik Mohammad Sharief, belongs to the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. The total number of jawans arrested in this case reached five last night.
The Army, however, plans to study the arrest reports of the three Muslim soldiers and pass its inputs to the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the CID, which verify the antecedents of those joining the defence services.
“We have learnt our lesson. We will pass on the inputs to ensure that such incidents don’t happen again,” said a senior intelligence officer.
The three soldiers were identified on June 15 this year, when the army launched an operation in J&K’s Mendar sector. Two militants named the three Muslim soldiers, who were arrested on July 8.
The Army stated the trio was under duress from LeT, which threatened to harm the soldiers’ families if they didn’t help its terrorists.

The Gaddars can belong to any Religion. Many in Dawood Gang even now are Hindus. And have you forgotten Hanifuddin who died in the Kargil war (there were quite a few muslims too).
The Background checks should be done on all and further checks should be done periodically.

And Dhuurwani pai, why do I have to remind you everytime that our president is not a muslim... just naam se muslim nahi ho jaate hai koi. Muslims are those who follow their book of peace to the last letter... and there is no other muslim.
And that Hainifuddin guy must be burning repeatedly in hell by now... as per the book of peace.
