http://www.indianexpress.com/grfx/trans.gif NEW DELHI, MARCH 3: With the death of an Indian Army jawan deployed on a UN peacekeeping mission in Ethiopia, the UN has blamed Eritrean airspace restrictions for having contributed to his demise. Lance Naik Ramesh Annappa Kamble (35) might have survived, UN sources say, had he not been compelled to wait six hours for an aircraft to fly to capital Addis Ababa.

Kamble, who belonged to the 25 JAK RIF battalion, suffered a heart attack on Wednesday while on patrolling duty. He was pronounced dead after being brought by a circuitous route to Addis Ababa just before 2 pm. After complaining of uneasiness and discomfort on Wednesday morning, Kamble was immediately taken to the Level-I hospital at the UN battalion headquarters in Adigrat province, near the Eritrean border. There he was diagnosed as having suffered a heart attack with arrhythmia, a condition involving irregular muscular contractions in the heart.

However, since Eritrean authorities have banned the use of helicopters by UN personnel, he was evacuated to the north Ethiopian town of Mekele by helicopter at 11 am. An Antonov-24 aircraft was flown down from the Ethiopian capital to take him to the Level-III hospital at Addis Ababa, but by the time he reached there, at around 1 pm, it was too late.

His body will be brought back to his Kohlapur village in Maharashtra on Saturday, where he will be cremated with military honours. Kamble, who enlisted in 1991, had been wounded in the Kargil conflict. He is survived by wife Sumati Bharati, son Suraj (6) and daughter Tejeswari (4).

United Nations is a piece of crap organisation sucking dry tax payer dollars of hard working citizens of member nations.

When I used to refer to Koffi Annan as Coffee Cup Annan, some would bristle. United Nations is irrelevant and useless. Its corrupt.

All these stupid African nations can only fight within themselves and kill each other. After seeing the reality inspired movie Lord Of War, I say, give guns to all sides and let them kill themselves all. Then just harvest the African diamonds and other resources.

The same UN which does not give a clear and correct mandate over Kashmir seeks our soldiers as part of peace keeping force. Why should we send our troops?

Anyway, poor soldier, died for nothing. Condolences to his family :(

Because a few of my family members have served in Indian Armed Forces, I know that soldiers are only too happy to serve in UN duties. This is because they are paid a lot more than their usual salary. So, for soldiers its like a mini-lottery:D:D

Sad Demise. Only 35 & dying young…:(

Ramesh, Its not Ethiopia laying restrictions on the UN's movements but neighbouring Eritrea, that’s disallowing UN helicopters from using its airsapce.

In any war zone, airspace restrictions are prevalent, this one’s no exception.

Its just bad luck for the poor but valiant soldier. Having a heart attack at the wrong place & at the wrong time. RIP. :(
