Sushmita's car fiasco: Dealer denies wrongdoing
I think we have had enough threads on the topic of Islam and violence and Muslims protesting and all that. I thought, lets get on to something else. Our Muslim brethren will be upto new tricks anyway, so we will rant and rave then. For now, its important to focus on Sushmita Sen :D
MUMBAI: Buying an imported car from a reputed dealer does not always spell no problem, as actor Sushmita Sen discovered recently. Her Toyota Land Cruiser, which was seized by the directorate of revenue intelligence last week, was bought from Haren Choksi, a reputed dealer.
The story began when the importer, one Vasu, contacted Choksi to find him a customer for the car. The Land Cruiser, worth Rs 19 lakh, was imported under the transfer of residence rules, the only category under which used foreign cars can be brought into India. The car arrived in March 2005 and Sen got it two months later.
However, rules prohibit the sale of a used car for two years after it lands in India. Thus Vasu entered into a "lease" agreement with Sen through Choksi. But the catch was the car's date of manufacture in the import papers had been declared as December 1998, whereas it was actually December 2003.
...This was done to quote a lower price for the car by working in the depreciation. The customs duty on the vehicle was a whopping 168%. Sen will now pay have to pay Rs 20 lakh more in duty.
When contacted by TOI, Choksi said the importer had approached him since he also supplies cars for film shoots. The RTO registration for the vehicle quoted the date of manufacture as 2004.
"We took the papers at face value," he said. Choksi said based on the RTO papers, neither he nor Sen could be accused of misdeclaration.
