Suicide bombers threatened in letters sent to local media that they would target a top politician and launch attacks against New Year's revellers in the city of Bangalore, police said on Friday.
A letter from a previously unknown group outlining the threatened attacks in Bangalore was faxed to several newspapers late on Thursday, the director-general of police, BS Sial, said.
"It will be the most coordinated attack the country has ever seen," television channel CNN-IBN quoted the letter, written in English, as saying.
Six attackers will trigger explosions including, "two human bombs to target the state chief minister," Moin-ud-Din of the Al-Jehadi group said, according to the report.
"Newspapers have received the letter late last night, and we are trying to find out if it is a hoax. But we will not take any chances," said Sial, without giving further details.
The letters were sent a day after gunmen opened fire on Wednesday outside a prestigious science institute in Bangalore, killing a retired professor and wounding four others.
Police set up barricades, patrolled streets and continued to search cars at checkpoints on Friday across the city, hunting for the attackers, Sial said.
Police suspect LeT terrorists to be behind Wednesday's attack, but no group has claimed responsibility.

the exact message recieved:

Fax number blanked out
Bangalore, Dec. 30: A copy of the threat letter was received in the Deccan Herald office by fax on Friday. The reporter handed over the copy to the city police commissioner. The person who faxed the letter ensured that the number from which it was faxed did not appear on the receiver’s copy.

The letter reads: “Please be informed that this new year eve will take the lives of hundreds of people celebrating at the Grand Ashok hotel function (sic). Three powerful bombs will go off at 10.30 pm planted in hotel and two other human bombs, Sarla and Hanif, will be triggered off at the chief minister’s residence during the chaos at Ashok Hotel (sic). It is one of the most systematic executions ever to take place in the country. Please stop it, I regret, Moinuddin (sic).”

This does not look like a threat letter... probably a hoax or a misleading note... Either somebody genuinely wants to stop the bombing from happening or plans on doing it elsewhere... hope our guys are smart enough...

I recollect the New Year celebrations in Bangalore when I was studying there.

Used to visit the pubs on Brigade road, party all night & then return to my paying guest accommodation in Richmond town after midnight. Boy it was fun then. No threat from the cops or anything whatsoever. Bangalore was always a safe & friendly city.

Hope the public in Bangalore have a trouble free New Year celebration this year…

This is either a real threat or a hoax or a sick prank by someone who does not have any plans or a party invite for New Year's Eve.

Lets see how each one pans out.

Recent attack in Bangalaore is already a fear veneer over people's mind. Now this new threat will put a damper on celebrations as people will be uncomfortable and police will clamp down celebrations.

If this is a hoax then its a sick perverted one to spoil other's fun for your own demented perverted sense of fun.

However, I think we have to be cautious. If you notice we have had few terrorist events in Kashmir since this whole peace process business started. Dont be lulled that peace process caused this drop in terrorist attacks. Pakistan is sort of under US pressure to let up their nefarious deeds in Kashmir. This is however causing the many small and big terrorist groups in Pakistan become uneasy. They want to continue their terrorism.

Now our Bangalore and Hyderabad and Chenna based software, call center and other BPO industry has received constant limelight internationally. This has most likely made the terrorists realise that these places are the soft spots to hit next. There is nothing much left in Kashmir. So they now are focussing on the soft spots.

The terrorists have already won as we are now beefing up security, dampening our fun and celebrations and the cops are now out to do a military like job of detecting bombs and terrorists.

I hope that great Father of the Nation up there is realising the follies of his last fateful fast to stop the events surrounding the partition in 1947.

This is possibly very sombre and morbid, but how many days into the New Year 2006 before we hear of a Middle East type suicide bombing in India?
:(:(

Unfortunately terrorists have found new soft spots to hit us - our high tech nerve centres!! :(

So, with this new progression of terror, do you think suicide bombings are far behind? Do you think our government and the great IB and RAW and CBI will do something for real to protect us? Will they prevent such attacks?

Suddenly pre-emptive strikes dont look all that bad and illogical.
