US, IIF for expansion of G7 to include India
The United States and an international association of financial institutions have called for expansion of the Group of Seven, a club of world's wealthiest nations, to include emerging economies like India.

Ahead of the meeting of G7 finance ministers, the US Treasury under-secretary for international affairs Tim Adams called for expansion of the exclusive club to include China, Brazil or India in recognition of their economic clout.

"I believe we ought to put some of these countries on a glide-path to being full-time participants in the G7," Adams said in a pre-G7 briefing.

"Whether we would call it the 'G-something' else remains to be seen. Obviously we'll have to do this in a measured fashion," he said.

"But I do think that we need an institution, the G7, that reflects a change in the world economy, to make sure that these critical players are at the table as we address these very important topics."

The G7 comprises the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada.

The International Institute of Finance (IIF), which represents 360 major banks and financial institutions from 60 countries, also suggested the expansion of the G7 to include India, China, Russia and Brazil.

"An effective approach requires the right authorities around the table. A new forum is needed that reflects the realities of today's globalised world and the rising importance of emerging markets," Managing Director Charles Dallara said.
