Hi Everybody,I am in a big fix for last 2 days .My domain name was expiring on 9th Sep and i had bought it thru my Indian Friend Last year ,and for renewal this year i was going thru another guy.Now my Indian Friend said that when the domain time period expired then only i will be able to renew it thru second guy and Instead he renewed it himself and now is in India. As the domain name was in business name and my mail id was also thru it,he took all the data to a second server and its locked,In the nutshell i cannot access my email and domain name comes being taken ,but the address and all the details are mine. Its a big problem and i don't want to take .net and .biz extensions.Suggest me a way out ,if there is one.
Thanks

Ramrajya,
Try this -->
1) Who is your domain registrar? Is it register.com?
2) Since all the information is in your name, you can contact them with proof that you are the owner of the domain.
3) Now the billing contact might be your friend. So you need to tell the registrar that you have 'removed' the billing contact from your organisation
This might end up in domain squatting type of dispute. But I had to tak charge of my earliest domain www.vidyut.com (http://www.vidyut.com) from someone who was in USA and I was in India. I had to furnish all proof to the registrar and fortunately the US billing contact was cool about making the necessary transfer. I think you might need consent of your friend to remove his name and put your name as domain billing contact.
Sorry, I cannot help you beyond this personal experience I have had with domain names.

A little more information might come in handy for those who could help:
- Who was your original domain registrar?
- How about the current registrar?
- When was the domain renewed? If it's been a day or two, who is listed as an owner of the domain under the whois? Which/whose email address appears for Administrative Contact?
Depending on the registrar, sometimes they give you a grace period of 15-30 days after the expiration dates to still renew the domain. If they don't, you're outta luck. The domain was allowed to expire, and it became available to reregister... and someone grabbed it before you can. Hopefully it's a mistake, and he'll return it back to you. Good luck.

Thanks Sunit and Charchilla, appreciate it fully.
About the registrar (Enom) emailed to legal@enom still waiting for reply and also it has backordered twice in other guys account so no one else can grab it...i believe...Secondly registrant, billing, contact, technical info and everything is still in my name...so i don't understand...i saw the underlying registry info which shows me he updated it on 11th and moved all the stuff to another server and its locked status....he is In India right now...i have mailed him but no response...he will be back to aus next week....but i am unable to understand his behaviour???? Very Strange

Registrar Lock is kind of a security features that prevents the domain to be transferred to another registrar. I believe you can "unlock" it (or disable the lock) from the domain name control panel; the lock is enabled by default as long as you're registered through enom (or their reseller). It's ok to have it locked.
You said it shows your name under whois. I assume it also has your email address, right? This is the email address you should be using when communicating with enom or the web host.
Just wondering, what does your web site's home page look like currently? Is it a customized message by "that dude" or does it have a Web Directory containing a bunch of affiliate links such as Vacation, Technology, Health & Beauty, Gifts, etc.?

Thanks again Charchila, its a web directory showing affiliates and everything, yes i emailed Enom thru same email ID but no response yet. What i am worried about most is my email ID on this domain.

Ah ok, that web directory page is enom's page for expired domains that they own now (until you renew it); they use it to display ads/links to your existing traffic ;) Your friend hasn't moved it to a different host, enom has... by pointing the name servers to their own.
Send an email to info@whois-help.info with this subject line: "Inquiring about the domain 'vistafurnishings.com', with status: Expired". In the body, request them that your domain has expired, and would like to renew it. They will send you information/steps of how to go about renewing it.
When you do receive an email from them, post here or PM me before you actually renew the domain... I *might* be able to reduce the price of the domain from $30 to $8.95.
By the way, the email address above came from your expired domain link at the top right of the page that reads "Why am I seeing this web site?"
Hope this helps.

ramrajya,
Please dont jump to conclusions about your friend. He might not have any malice towards you or your domain name. Just take it easy. Inform your customers that there are some 'technical' problems. Try to phone your friend in India.
Take it easy and think with cool head. All will work out. And after friend returns, ask him cool-ly about how to access yoru site, yoru data and you leanr it all. Then take charge and change passwords and keep things under YOUR OWN control.

Yeah Sunit i believe he should not be the mess creator but these other people thru whom i am going for 2yr renewal they are telling me that he is not passing the ownership rights and on top of that they are getting backordering.well my business per se doesn't depend on website but emails are very important. But now on when he returns i will take the charge.
Anyways u guys are great thanks heaps for genuine and honest replies.
Hopefully should be sorted out by next week when he is back.
Just out of curiosity if u can tell why enom didn't email me with anything as to expiry and renewal and moved it to their nameservers.i have worked in Marketing but nothing is more baffling than computers,i have sold them alas i could have learnt more about them.

The domain is now registered by enom for another year. They are trying to make some money by trying to sell the domain back to you for a high price, which itself is considerably higher than the market price out there (and there are good reasons for that too). If you decide to give up the domain, they'll make some money by showing ads to existing customers/traffic to that domain name.
They'll probably ask you to pay them $30 to reclaim the domain name from them. If you agree to pay them the amount, they'll transfer the ownership to you and it will expire on 9/9/06. After the one month deadline, price will go up to $160, if I remember correctly. I'm just sharing my personal experience... they may have changed their approach to deal with expired domains.
Like I said, I *might* be able to get you the domain for $8.95 as long as they're allowing you to reclaim it for $30 - no guarantees though. If you want to give that a try, post here or PM me when u get their response to your email. I'll tell you what to do next.

Chances are that your domain was not registered directly at enom.com, but one of their resellers for a much lower price. Therefore, it is not enom's responsibility to notify you of the expiration dates. Most resellers do send out these noticies/warnings before your domain expires.
If your admin/technical/billing/etc. email addresses are the same, you should have received these notices... but you or your friend may have turned these notifications off from the control panel. On the other hand, if at least one of the email addresses under admin/technical/billing/etc. is different, then I am not sure which one is supposed to be receiving these noticies; I'd guess the email address listed under Billing should.
Maybe you should ask your friend where he registered the domain from. (enom is the parent company, and they're only in the picture now since your domain is expired. It is very likely that your domain was registered through an enom reseller like godaddy or namecheap.)
