View Full Version : How have you handled unwanted advise and tips?

Many times you meet someone or get acquainted with someone or especially when you introduce someone new to your group of friends. At these times, its quite possible, and it happens many times, that people start giving you free advise and tips
However well meaning it may seem, you really are in no mood or need for such free and helpful hints.
For example, some folks we met recently started on a list of tourist places that we should see! I mean, you can ask if we have been around to wherever you have been; but prodding and vehemently advocating that we go to such and such a place is a bit too much. And repeatedly keeping the conversation on the same topic is downright pathetic
This happens not only with tourist spots but about so many other activities and topics.
It gets very difficult to tactfully steer the topic and not hurt the other person.
Have you experienced such a thing?
How have you tactfully steered away from such free help? ;)

some folks go so much into things which can affect personal life, that it becomes difficult. Fortunately it has not happened with me, but I have seen it happen to some close firends.
Every one assumes that if you are a newly arrived H4 visa spouse, then you need to spend time by studying for either MS or MBA.
Then folks think that immediately joining a social service organisation will be the panacea for sitting idle at home.
I feel like saying to such folks that "Hey keep your damn advise to yourself and dont impress others!"
Fortunately, Shama has enough on her hands to keep her busy throughout the day and she knows how much to listen to and act upon. ;)

I dont see this as a strange or unwanted phenomenon.
This is very common feature i observed in every human being i came accross, not just indians. This only reflects people's convictions about certain/related issues. People are so much convinced about these issues that , they cannot sleep without propagating them.
Super Girl's idea is the best thing to do in such situation( i generally follow this :)), after all it is you who are going to make a decision , not the 'advisor'.

seems charcha bhaiyya or one of friends is facing this problem. if you tell the problem then may be we could figure out how to tackle this person who is trying to impose himself.
of course the very last option will always be to tell that person to f*uck off and dont give a second thought about if you have hurt the person or not.

I normally, continue to listen and nod... once it gets too much, I start stifling yawns and other subtle bodily gestures to let him know that , "bhai... bahut ho gaya". But being the polite guy that I am, I continue nodding even when I am stifling those yawns.

ye sab paitre ek do baar ke liye thik hai, par jab koi tumhari body language nahi samajhta, your yawning and just nodding saying nothing or hmmmming tab aisa hota hai ki ye silsila repeat hota jaata hai. tab kya kare?
