SLAMABAD: Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner facing death sentence in Lahore, on Saturday admitted he was responsible for a series of bomb attacks that killed several people across eastern Pakistan.
The confession by Sarabjit Singh came weeks after Pakistan's Supreme Court upheld the death sentence handed to him in 1991 on charges of spying for India's intelligence agency and carrying out the attacks.
Singh's family, however, has said he was not a spy and that he strayed accidentally into Pakistani territory in August 1990 while farming his land near a border town of eastern Pakistan.
"Yes, I carried out bomb attacks," Singh told state-run Pakistan Television. Singh's photos have widely been published in Pakistani newspapers.
It was not clear when and where Singh's statement was recorded, but it came a day after Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf told The Associated Press that the man had "carried out terrorist attacks and killed people here."

LOL :D Vyomi, one has got to look at a confession extracted by the pakistanis, or even the indian police, for that matter with a large pinch of salt.
i have not really been following this saga but for the prime minister to personally interfere in this matter leads me to believe that his family's version of the story is more likely to be correct than that proferred by the pukis. the pukis have jailed several indian fishermen as spies when they have strayed accidentally into paki territory. this is nothing new.
if the indian government is intervening at a high level he must be what we say is is- a stupid, drunken mofo. if he is ever returned to india he should be stripped naked and paraded on a donkey for being a stupid ba5tard :D

Vyomi what makes you think that his statement is voluntary? I don't think he's an idiot or he shud be hung, it was OK for us Indians to keep hearing about MMS scandals but the moment it comes to something like this it becomes a 'hype' for us. If you can for 2 seconds imagine yourself in his place, not being able to go back to your country, define death ahead, no way of reaching back to your family or justifying yourself. The circumstances that he is don't give us a right to judge his innocense as we don't know what's really going on behind the scenes. And frankly I am glad the Indian govt is atleast doing some work in trying to fight for its citizen. Pukis are known to be hostile and this could very well be a framed case. We don't know and just because we don't have enough patience I don't think we should start cussing out this guy because he was perhaps made to give a statement which falsed all hopes of us Indians that he's a good guy and we want him back. In any case he's not anti-India that we shud be jumping to get his blood and get this chapter over with.

Rightly said dawizard bhai...
As a matter of fact when Dawood Ibrahim, the most wanted criminal by India is happily staying in Karachi under the covert protection of the Pukis & the Pak government still denying his presence, then how can India trust the Pakis on their claim here? This too could be a concocted case.

i'm reminded of the indian method of cathing a lion "Catch any animal and beat and torture it till it admits it is a lion" Cannot be sure its not the same or worse in this case as Pukistan is involved

Musharraf rejects mercy petition of Indian POW
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf [Images] has rejected the mercy petition of Indian citizen Sarabjit Singh, condemned to death for his alleged involvement in four bomb blasts in Pakistan in 1990.
Sarabjit, who Pakistan claims is Manjit Singh, was sentenced to death for his alleged involvement in the bomb blasts in Lahore [Images] and Multan that killed about 14 people. His family denies he was a spy as claimed by Pakistan and insists he accidentally strayed into Pakistani territory.
The mercy appeal filed by Sarabjit was rejected by the President after 'thorough consideration', Pakistani news agency NNI reported quoting unnamed sources.
"The allegations against Sarabjit were proved and he was awarded capital punishment by court", the sources said.
The 'black warrant' or death warrant for Sarabjit could be issued at 'any time', NNI reported.
However, Sarabjit's Lahore-based lawyer Rana Abdul Hamid said he had not been informed officially about the rejection of the mercy petition.
The development came even as Kashmir Singh, another Indian national sentenced to death on charges of spying, was reunited with his family on Tuesday after Musharraf pardoned him and set him free.
Two years ago, Musharraf had said he would take a decision about Sarabjit after looking into the legal aspects of his case. Sarabjit had sent a mercy petition to Musharraf seeking release on the grounds that he was innocent and wrongly implicated.
Pakistan's Supreme Court also rejected Sarabjit's mercy petition in March 2006

Is Sarabjeet really a spy for the IB or RAW? If yes, then IB and RAW will never disclose their association with him. He will be left all alone to face the death penalty.
If he is an innocent farmer who strayed into Pakistan, then he should be released and brought back home. Even if he is a spy for India, we should do whatever possible to ensure his release.

So what you are basically saying is that he is an innocent farmer who strayed into Pukestan;) And our government should go gung ho with this statement on Pukestan's government's ass.

We have proof that Afzal was involved a 100% in the attacks on our Parliament, and we have arrested him. He is not even directly stating that he is innocent, yet our government wont hang him. Look at Pak, they think Sarabjit is involved and are going to hang him anyway.
