How many of you hop jobs? How many years do you put in every company that you join?
There are two schools of thought as far as I know
1) A guy who sticks to a company for many years is considered as a guy who is incapable of switching jobs.
2) A guy who changes too many jobs is not worthy of carrying out any responsibility cannot rise to the top.
Pls share your opinions. Also, how many years in one company is seen healthy for your resume?

at the beginning of your career you can be forgiven for changing jobs once a year for the first two or three years.
after that you need to show some stability in your CV. i'd say 3-5 years in one job would generally be appropriate.
if you have a CV spanning ten years and have move jobs six or seven times it does not go down too well with a new prospective employer.

Also depends on the company. If company is going places, then a long innings with such a company will boost your c.v.

That's an interesting point. They say if the company is expanding investing heavily then your prospects of growth are bright.

I think your question is improperly articulated:D
Do you mean switching JOBS or switching EMPLOYERS?
These days you can switch jobs in the same company...and some companies actually require you to rotate amongst different departments during your primary phase of tenure with that company

i dont think we need to completely agree with tha 2 points..
if a person loves his job/boss/pay/co-workers/working hrs, he/she has no reason to hop..
on tha otha hand, a person who is a consultant and job-hops too often may be doing so fo a fatter pay check..
it depends on yo priorities i guess..i may be happy as a developer while anotha developer may be eyeing tha managerial position..but if theres no way fo him to reach there in that company, hez gon hop..now thiz dont mean he aint a capable employee..
also, i dont think any1z gon judge you (ur resume) based on how many years u spent in 1 company..fo example a person may have juz spent 4 mnths in a company but must've toiled 10-12 hrs a day coz that may be tha reason why he was hired ova there in tha 1st place.. while i kno a couple of people who got nuttin to do but have still spent lyke 2 yrs sittin on they asz doin nuttin in 1 company..
juz mah 2 cents based on wha i have seen so far..

I think the metric for assesing your abilities and skills are not strictly based on number of years in a job but the tasks you accomplished. Its the way in our company.
For example - You are in company A and worked on a product/project Xver1.0. It took you, say 2 years for it. Then you worked on X ver.2.0 and worked on the new features and critical updates to the same. Now it took another year to finish it. Well, you have 3 years experinence with the complete development of X in a company and if you move then it will not be taken as a negative. However, if you were there for a product and just jumped half way, then the prospective employer is going to be a bit apprehensive. Why did you quit? Management problems? Personal issues? Performance problems? Etc. etc.
Employers look for a candidate who has been through the inception till delivery of a project/product and has participated in as many aspects of the same.
Though you are not from QA team, did you participate in reviewing the QA plans for your module?
Though you are not in the Configuration Management team, did you participate in understanding what the deliverables are? What are you expected to hand over?
You are not the tech support, but have you ever talked with your tech support folks to see what kinds of problems customers face with your products and have you tried to help with a urgent priority issue for a customer reported problem?
Have you taken interest in Usability studies and understood what users want?
Any employer wants a well rounded "solution provider" and not just a "good coder/developer".
(Offcourse if you are fresh out of college then you better be a moron chained to your desk and say Yes Sir, Yes Sir to your Project Lead and do as he says! and then try to surf the net when no one is looking:D)
My advise - If you say on your resume that you have, say, 10 years of experience then ensure that it is really 10 years of doing something new and mastering it and not just 1 year of experience multiplied by 10!

Regarding 1.),I don't think that is true...Everyone knows what it takes to clear an interview...many people have been seen clearing the interviews who were really inefficient at their work.
If you work for a company and do your work sincerely ,your value to the organization is bound to be recognized....
Sometimes you need to show your resignation letter to see how much recognition company has for you :D...but don't do that until you have an offer in your hands...
So if your growth and paycheck are okay in your organization, there is no reason you should leave it....If you are dissatisfied there is no reason you should stay there....

Then there is this issue about personal "eqations", meaning some dumb fcuks keep rising to the top because their bosses are fond of them. Also in some companies some incompetant ass.holes who have risen to the top due to these "equations" in order to cover their asses they would require some more incompetant asses sourrounding them. This gives them a good cushioning effect, meaning their short commings will be covered by their cronies. So it's like a I guard your ass you guard mine scenario.
Have you seen that happen and how many have successfully managed to become an important variable in those "equations"? If yes HOW?

Same story in my org too...But I have rarely seen a sincere guy being sidelined...That is just not possible...
Many a$$holes have been seen rising but their rise is limited. They can rise only till their boss stays and has a say.As soon as boss goes, their condition becomes pathetic.

If you give up being competent and spend more energy into becoming a comfortable part of the 'equation' you mentioned, then trust me, you will be a nobody in a very short time. You might survive within your company for some time, but sooner rather than later, your bluff will be called. Its IT industry and not some dumb road contractor type job where nothing really changes.
Do you want to secure your own future or do you wish to be part of such political equations and screw your own skills, competency and career?
Please remember that every company in this world has this small set of people who are only into such political equations. These morons do survive for some time but dont really make progress nor remain too long in the company. So ignore such morons and if you are unfortunately in their midst due to your organisation structure then find the fastes way to get out.
Get out of suchs situations as DesiBaba has rightly said and seek a better path for success.
Wishing you all the very best for your job hunt - in case you are planning to.

No nothing of that sort, politics exists in all organisations. At least that's what my experience with many companies so far suggests. The scale of politics is what determines your stay.As far as my current organisation is concerned so far it looks as though it is absolutely performance driven.
But then look at Vivek Paul for example. A guy who pulled Wipro up by it's bootstrings and raised it from a 150 Million Dollar Co. to a whopping 1.5 Billion Dollar company. He's quit now and he's not quit entirely due to better prospects. In his words he's left due to pulls and pushes. So if that could happen to someone like him we are mere mortals. So was just wanting to know peoples opinios.
