There are two totally legit companies on the net that are making big bucks through referral based "free merchandise" websites.

What you have to do is:
1. Register with them (directly or using someone's referral id) - I think initially they only require your email address
2. Sign up for one of their affiliates - usually requires a credit card, but many of these offers have free trials like Free AOL for a month, or free Blockbuster Online trial period, etc. There are many well-known/respected sites... and I doubt they would share your privacy or credit card info to anybody else including these free sites.
3. Refer X number of people - number of people depends on the site (for whatever item). iPods require 5 referrals, digital cameras require 7, flat screens (TVs and monitors) require 8, and so on. There are free laptops too with 17 referrals :p
4. The hardest of all - each of your referrals have to register and sign up for one of the offers just like you did (free aol, etc.)

They make money through these referral sign ups. Some people drop out, some just sign up to help their friends, some get caught cheating so don't receive merchandise, etc.

These offers are only good for USA (and some for Canada).

They're strict on cheating. They keep track of IP addresses and stuff, so its recommended not to use the same computer to sign up for two accounts (i.e. work place, school, library machines).

I suggest that if echarchans are interested in signing up for these offers, they use each others' referral IDs to help each other out.

It is hard to get the referrals because people think its a fraud. I knew it was legit, and went for it. There are plenty of sites on the web where users share pics of free stuff they've received, like the one I posted above.

You and your referrals have to sign up (almost all require a credit card) for a service using the links they give you when you login to your account on these sites. These are their affiliate links, so they get certain commission when someone signs up for a service. As I mentioned above, many of these affiliates offer free trial periods, which you can cancel before it expires... so you don't have to pay anything. I signed up for Free AOL Trial, and canceled it within a month... so I didn't have to pay anything.

Thanks again... but honestly, these guys kept their word about no spam policy. Didn't receive any spam from them. In fact, they sent out an email a couple of months telling their members something of this sort: "We don't spam you, so please don't spam the net with your referral links." They didn't ask for phone number, and only asked for my address when I was approved and placed the order. Fraud hota to iPod thode hi bhejte :)
