Last night we were at a friend's place for dinner. His parents are leaving soon for Mumbai.

The father was saying that since Maharashtra government has banned 'gutkha' like Pan Parag and Manickchand, the gutkha makers have come up with a 'novel' idea. They sell the supari minus the tobacco in a pouch and then they sell just the 'tobacco' in a different pouch. So a gutkha consumer has to just buy the two separately and then mix them to get his fix!

I was surprised to hear this but then as they say - the law is an ass. The gutkha makers surely found a big loophole in this ban law.

this has come as a complete surprise to me. i did not know that makekchand was banned by the maharashtra government. well done to them. i had always thought that manekchand was too powerful to be banned.

but the law is an a55. as long as tobacco itself is not banned there will be nothing to stop them selling in this way. but sales will have reduced. gutka is a horrible product.

Lawmakers are bigger Ar*eholes :D than the law itself. Why allow Cigarettes and bidis while ban Gutkha on the grounds that it is injurious to health. All are tobacco products and are harmful to health Period.

Why go against Gutkha makers but not against Ciggy and Bidis. Probably because ITC is a far more bigger lobby than any gutkha maker. Or they dont want to ban pro-poor bidi :D
