the best way is to disable the messenger service.. here are the steps..
To make it so others cannot send these messages to you, disable the Messenger service from Services. (Go to Control Panel > Perf. & Maint. > Administrative Tools > Services. Double click the Messenger Service, change 'Automatic' to 'Disabled' and click the Stop button.) Once you've done this, people trying to send messages via the net message service will get errors. While you're at it, it might be wise to disable the 'Administrative Alerts' service as well.
The description Microsoft gives for this service is as follows: "Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

Download GOOGLE tool bar .It comes with popup blocker. You wont see any annoying popups after you download it.

is to apply the Microsoft security patch which will take care of this. The Messenger service is a legitimate Windows service required for Windows to get updates and other messages sent by your Windows admin and should be kept on. But spammers have found a security loophole and they annoy you with these popups. So apply the security update by searching for this update on MS site and prevent such popups once and for all.
Using popup blockers and turning off the service will only stop the problem temporarily.

Desiboy's reply is correct. Turn the 'Messenger service' off. Instead of disabling it, you may want to make it manual so as to get automatic updates from MS website (if you enabled that service).
Pop up blockers like Google Toolbar will not help in this case.

where can one get _all_ the services of these spyware programs for free? They all seem to cost $ if u need them to remove something after detection[Spykiller etc]...yes, I am trying the freeware, el-cheapo approach first...:D
tho' ad-aware does remove what it detects...but it does not seem to detect trojan horses etc...
