View Full Version : Male Chauvinism - Is it still prevalent even among the younger generation?

This thread is in connection with this other thread: http://www.echarcha.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=1596
Since the topic of feminism was raised at a recent dinner I attended with friends, I wanted to supplement that with this current topic about men.
I wanted to know your take on issues like:
- Has there been change in attitude of Indian men towards women?
- Do you see the younger generation still having chauvinistic ideas?
- Have you noticed men being overly dictatorial despite being well educated and in the US, where they see a much freer and open society in terms of treatment and respect of women.
Hope we can have some good charcha... So that I too can add a lot of your feddback on this topic if it comes up again with friends ;)

Nice topic.
Its quite simple. Personally speaking I am neither for the hardcore women's lib, but would neither want to take anything lying down.
Yes there is a marked change in the attitudes of the younger crowd, but the underlying sentiments and double standards are still there.
Referring to the other thread and answering some of the questions (all my opinions)-
1. No feminism is not at all about proving that men are chauvinistic pigs or anything else for that matter. I would say it is about not underestimating women. If I am wrong and someone, be it a man or woman comes forward to point it out, I would more than gladly accept that. Similarly, if this done just to spite me or just to prove me wrong just for perverse pleasure, this is when the problem starts.
2. All I want is that if I do something that is beyond the traditional realm, men or for that matter women should not be judgmental about it. Our's is a society full of double standards. If a girl has a lot more male friends then female friends, she is labelled as chalu. But if a guy has more girl than boy friends then he is labelled a stud. It is examples of like this that rile me.
I do not even want to stay a step ahead of men. I know there are a lot of things that they are able to do, which I cannot even think of. But I want credit when it is due. An example, I am the handy man around the house. I love to assemble furniture, hook up our home theatre system, fix things in the house. But to this day when people hear this, they say "No! it cannot be. Is it really true? why didn't your husband do it?" Why can't I do it? What is wrong if I do it and my husband doesn't? I am not saying that its just men, women contribute a lot to this attitude too. I think our society is so used to being patriarchal that it is very difficult to accept that a person is capable of or is doing things that are outside the traditional male setup too. In fact, I think men are subject to female chauvinism too. Any man who cooks, takes days off to take care of his kids, cleans the house is labelled as servile!
Outlook is improving but we still have a long way to go.
Secondly, I do not want all chores to be split in to 50-50 for all jobs, but yes I do want my husband to contribute to everything - be it taking care of the house or our kid. I will not fight if he doesn't, but I will definitely voice my displeasure. If he still doesn't, I will go ahead and do the work, because after all it is still my kid and house. At work it is a different ball game all together. Despite all the that is said and done, there are still men who thing that women are secondary bread winners of the family. Their jobs as not as important as compared to that of their husbands. When our son is sick and needs to go to the doctor, and if my husband takes time off to do this, eyebrows are raised. When my husband cleans and bathes our son (including diapering) people comment. If he enjoys taking care of his son, why does it surprise other people.
I work even though I do not need to. This makes our people comment, why don't you stay home and raise your kid? As it is there is a silent war going on between working and stay at home moms. It is my choice to be independent, it is my choice to pay my credit card bills and it is my choice that I make my car payments all by myself. I am not saying that stay at home are not independent. They are. But it is my personal choice. Why is it a that a woman gets labelled as "not a good mother"?
There is no solution to all this. But yes attitudes are changing but not in all areas.
Being in India or in the US has nothing to do this. Any Indian is an Indian anywhere in the world. For that matter a lot of Americans are also not too accommodating. Ever seen a redneck who is also a chauvinist (male or female), they are the worse!

on a personal 0ne-to-one relationship, male chauvinism is always going to be there - till the end of mankind - 'cause that's how the whole genepool has been designed by GOD(or whoever else claims to be the designer).
all we can try and do is try to cover up that basic natural instinct for chauvinism - but for how long?
futile effort, If i may say so.

yes it does exist. though it is a lot more subtle you can see it in almost every man you come across. all you have to do is ruffle his feathers a bit. not only in real life it is so apparent in some of the male posters on this site.

"DECLARATION OF MALE CHAUVINISM"
Before I marry you to be my wife
I have a few things I must say
They may sound quite harsh
But listen to me for they are my true feelings
Never go to bed before I do
And never wake up later than I
Be a good cook
And always be beautiful
As much as you can
Don't forget
A man who can't do a good job
Can't possibly look after his own family
You have your own role that only you can perform
Otherwise keep quiet and just follow me
Parents of yours and mine are both very precious
So take good care of them all
Deal wisely with all your in-laws
It'll be easy if you just love them
Don't gossip nor lend your ear to them
And don't be jealous over petty matters
For I will never have an affair
Probably I won't
I don't think I'll do
But be prepared just in case I do
Happiness is something we grow together
Not something to be patched up by one or the other
Since you are leaving your home and coming in to mine
Think that you've nowhere to return
From now on, I'll be your home
After the kids have grown up and we've grown old
You mustn't die before I do
Even if it's just only one day
You mustn't pass before I do
I don't ask you anything
But just hold my hand and shed tears at least two or more
And I will say
I owe my wonderful life to you
I promise you I will
Don't forget the woman I love
The woman I'll ever love in my life
Is you and only
Don't forget the woman I love
The woman I'll ever love in my life
Is you and only you

if so, why try to cover it.
we males were designed to do react in a chauvinistic manner with females.
Hypocrites - are those who try to hide this basic instinct.

Thanks, Langotji. You see, I am not into Super Man movies. I prefer romantic comedies and courtroom dramas. The Rainmaker and Ghosts of Mississippi being my favourites. :)
