Given that IP addresses are of the form x.x.x.x where 0 <= x < 256, doesn't this limit the number of IP addresses on the internet to 255*255*255*255 = 4,228,250,625? What's going to happen when all the addresses are used up?

Actually, even fewer than that. There are certain address ranges that can't be used on the Internet, such as broadcast addresses (all ones on a given subnet) and private network ranges (10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255, 172.31.0.0 - 172.16.255.255 and 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255).

IPv4 follows classful addressing scheme..
range of values for each class:

class - Lowest address - Highest Address
A - 1.0.0.0 - 126.0.0.0
B - 128.1.0.0 - 191.255.0.0
C - 192.0.1.0 - 223.255.255.0
D - 224.0.0.0 - 239.255.255.255
E - 240.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.254

127.0.0.0 = LOOPBACK ADDRESS - used for inter-process communication on the local computer

that's history you are talking about .. CIDR in ... supernet & subnet and got rid of classes long time ago...

Ish ke finish hone se pahle Ip me bhi virus aa ne lagega aur HDD jaise format-reformat hogaa IP ka bhi aur tu bhi aur Microsoft business bhi chaltaa rahegaa........................... :o

Next generation IP address will be 64 bit address... almost most of the machines are 64bit now.. it will be implemented soon... and thats only way every thing that are imagined now to be connected can be connected

the limitation of dotted decimal address with each octet being just 8 bits, they have now come up with IPv6 scheme.

IPv4 or the IP address space that we use today is 32 bit long (8 bits per octet. Total of 4 octets)

IPv6 or the IP of the future and being implemented in many places now will be 128 bit long (32 bits per octet)

= 4 billion addresses

IPv6

IPv4 provides 2 raised to 128 addresses
