View Full Version : What would be the top 3 things that would prevent your return to India?

Okay, here is something, that I thought might be interesting.
Many have talked about returning to India after working for a stretch of a few years in US or some place else.
I know many who do return and then some who want to return but cannot for various reasons and then some who just want to stay outside India.
Many of you have already made a comfortable amount of resources so that settling back in India wont be much of a monetary concern. Many have still to make it monetarily here. But anyways, if you had to consider returning home and starting work there in either the sameor a different field, then would you do it?
So coming back to the moot question - If you were to seriously think about going back to India now, not at the retirement age, then
- what would make you go or
- what would prevent you from returning?
... and being able to get home before sunset

what would make one go?
well, there are so many things they cannot even be put down here. Home, parents, family, environment even desi babes :D
what would prevent?
would require some serious thought, like if some one puts a gun to my temple and says agar vaapas jaane ki koshish ki to trigger dab jayega :D
well of course money is the first reason, however much one earns, it is never enough. another can be straight easy life here, lesser hassles, for ex it is a struggle even to travel in locals in mumbai. I cant seem to think many right now

In my heart, I know for sure that I'll return, but one visit to TOI site, and my resolution starts quivering.
Top three reasons that can prevent me:
1)The same shitty political situation back home
2)If they don't do something about the pollution levels of delhi by then
3)If the custom people at Indira gandhi airport start asking me for bribes or give me trouble for nothing. I'll take the next frikkin plane back.
Things that'll make me go back:
-Family
-Friends
-Food
...and I hope Tom Cruise dies.

what would make you go
kids.... that's what will make me go... i want my kids to grow up in a drug/sex free environment and respect me the way i respect my parents.... that is the biggest reason to go....
what would prevent you from returning?
traffic (one can really die driving in delhi) and back stabbing traitors i.e. people like eNRI who abound there.... fortunately money is not an issue for me out or inside india....
Super Girl

ACtually, Big-G , the direction of this thread is very pertinent to the topic. I used to miss banter like this all the time, till I started visiting gandmasti.com and echarcha.com. For most of my time in the US, I have been in projects where there have been no other desis.
Yahaan par desi style mein timepass ho jaata hai, which would be one reason to go back. See .. kya sixer maara hai .. wah wah ..

I would love to return to India, but I guess I am one of those who are here for some reasons.
I basically come from a regular middle class Maharashtrian family. Parents provided all that they could in terms of a good education and a good upbringing with all the comforts that they could afford.
I am not cribbing about how less or how much I had and how much I want to make and earn. I was content with things back home till about 4 and half years after graduating as an engineer. But certain things made me decide to come overseas and get a better opportunity - not only career wise but even monetarily.
Well, I would love to go back and take up a job in software. What would prevent me is not the pollution or pot-holes and the crazy traffic in Mumbai.. I grew up with it, so I am used to it and wont compalin about it.
What might prevent me is the stumbling block at every corner when you try to do something new and creative - be it in business or a job.
Somehow I feel that you end up doing all the things that you are not interested in or hate to do, so that you may do what you love most. Dealing with any government body is a prime example.
I miss Mumbai, I miss the sights and sounds of Mumbai. I miss my mother back home. Though she visits me here I do miss the big family get togethers on different ocassions like Ganpati and Diwali and Dassera.
The major problem back home from a monetary persepctive is the potential to save something for the future. I am sure that I can get a job which will allow me to maintain my life style as it was back home before I cam here or even afford me a little more, but I am not sure if I can save enough for my future and future kids. The other thing I think seriously about is the school-college and admission process through which I went. It was pretty difficult back then and I am sure that with new rules it will have become even worse.
The infaltion back home worries me. Though I find our desi vegetables more tasty than the larger and fresher looking vegetables in the food superstores here, the cost of basic things like food back home is escalating.
This might sound very trivial or small, but there are many such issues that I compare when thiking of going back. Money is definitely a factor - I am not fooling myself. Though I dont have ambitions or delusions of becoming a multi-millionaire, I definitely want to ensure a secure financial future for myself and my family.
Maybe things will improve in a few years and returning will be a viable option.
I really miss home... whatever it is, however it is.. its still my home.

i still remember, when i had to get my income tax clearance certificate, inspite of having paid every penny of my tax (deducted at source) i had to grease every focking palm till i got the certificate. At the time, i hated everything about the system..the government. Those bastads sitting in the IT office.
I just wanted to get the hell outta that place. But now, i miss everything.
.... but that's totally an off thread comment.

1. COCKROACHES
2. COCKROACHES
3. COCKROACHES
laal_langot
May 7th, 2001, 04:59 AM
Arrey desi cockroaches are harmless since they are malnutritioned(unless they come from some Haryanvi jaat family home)...Swiss cockroaches are brought up on pure cheese and chocolate so they are much more dangerous..
Netra
May 7th, 2001, 05:02 AM
Desi cockroaches ki size dekhiye langotji. Swiss cockroaches are miniscule, they don't fly and they don't come on you. Even now when I visit India, I spend sleepless nights.
Can you recommend a good psychiatrist in India? I tried one here, but he couldn't get a desi cockroach for me to confront. So I am back to where I started.
laal_langot
May 7th, 2001, 05:15 AM
Arrey they are small because like all western kids the adults are not HOMELY so you wont find them at home...uske liye you will have to go the kitchen of your favourite eating joint or disco(if you still disco mein khisko that is) nightclub etc...
Desi cockroaches fly because like all desis they want to fly to a phoren land(where they will find gori cockroachnis)...
As for a good psychiatrist in India...the best one is kids....any kid...just ask them to get a cockroach for you...and watch them do that...first they hunt it to hearts content(achhi tarah dance all over it) and then hold it by the antennae and bring it to you...havent you seen Mr India??seems like aapke case mein darti to aap sher ke baap se bhi naheen hain...parr haan cockroach alag baat hai...

bilul sahi kaha aapne. Sher se nahin darti hoon lekin cockroach se darti hoon. It must be a funny sight. Me with my 5 ft 7 inches and 69 kgs standing on a sofa screeming!

Forget about the sofa, last time I screamed so loud, the cockroach ran away in fright.
laal_langot
May 7th, 2001, 05:36 AM
In that case you shouldnt have any problems desh or videsh....only thing is remember to scream in hindi/marathi when you go back home...you probably have been using deutsche thus far...
The cockroach ran away and what about the others???or are they used to 100 decibels and above??how many times a wek do you get new window panes??

The only thing that frightens me about India is the SIZE OF COMPETITION.
Although very sucessful when in India, the thought of having to fight through the HUGE COMPETION to achieve anything is scary.
eg. to do my MBA in USA, all I did was give a TOEFL and GMAT and I was into the unversity....rest is standard stuff to pass the exams.
to do an MBA in India(don't even talk about IIM), you have to fight through half a million guys competing for the same 120 seats....the though shivers me.
when you finally get your MBA you have to fight couple of million guys who are applying for the same post and the only thing that works in most cases is "Sifarish".
and after bieng away from India, building up the sifarish dtabase is something that you need to start all over again...and I hate starting all over again.
