View Full Version : Parents should stay with their daughters

This suggestion came from my Sri Lankan friend. The advantages cited were:

- End of dowry system

- People will look forward to having daughters

- A woman finds it easier to look after her own parents when they are sick rather than her parents-in-law, especially her father-in-law, when it comes to giving bed pans etc.

- If a daughter says something to her parents they don't mind, but if a daughter-in-law says the same thing, they take it badly

I know that fellow male e-charchans are going to protest. My brother also did. But think coolly and give your comments.

Sorry, I forgot to give my opinion.

I personally believe in independent families. Once the children are grown up they should be allowed to start their own families under a separate roof. However, given the conditions prevailing in India, sky-rocketting prices of apartments and other overhead costs, living in a joint-family seems the only possible solution. Also, we Indians feel we owe a lot to our parents and do not want to leave them on their own.

Given this, I second my Sri Lankan friend that parents should live with their daughters.

A number of seniors in US live in adult communities where only 55+ can buy houses. This gives them a good circle of friends around them. They visit their kids and sometimes kids and grandchildren visit them.

Staying with kids sometimes causes friction especially between MIL and DIL and often the generation gap keeps the seniors confined to just themselves. There are hardly any common items of interest between them and their children. Often parents staying with son or daughter become unpaid baby sitters.

When staying in an adult community, seniors interact with people of their age who share same interests talk about movies and songs of their times and find comfort in sharing their problems of living on a fixed income.

Just my opinion on subject, not open to discussion or bashing of my ideas on senior living and Indian cultural blah blah blah.

eNRI, I agree with you. My husband's cousin lives in such a community in California and such communities also exist in Switzerland and I would love doing the same if such communities exist in India. They are much better than old age homes where you cannot come and go freely.

Seno, mere ladke bhi hote, to bhi yehi kehti. I'd rather not have children rather than have sons like Gandesh and his think-alikes who I don't want to name.

Do you think girls' parents will start asking for dowry from the boys and whether boys will be burnt alive for not bringing in enough?? Tit for tat. :D :D :D

HA HA HA.

You know Seno, I quite like the idea of having Gandesh as a ghar jamai. I'll invite you not only for the wedding, but also for the 1st wedding anniversary, so that you can see the difference: Before and After.

Gandesh, I am not proposing the parents move in with their daughter after she gets married. I am proposing she stays with her parents and the husband moves in.

Samajh mein aayee baat?
