CALCUTTA, India (Reuters) - Calcutta prostitutes said they planned to mark May Day Tuesday by burning effigies of Afghanistan's Taliban leaders to demand that women have the right to choose their profession.
The staunchly Islamic Taliban stirred international outrage in March by destroying two giant statues of Buddha, saying they considered them heathen idols. The Taliban, who seized power in 1996, have also been widely condemned for their treatment of women.
