be it a poem , a short story , a play , works related to philosophy , thrillers and such...something that compels you to come back to it again and again...something which is a fountainhead of courage and hope or something about which you are just plain passionate...

Senorita,

There is only one piece of literature that can live up to the high expectaions that you listed ... Playboy .. it comples you to come back to it again and again .. and dont even get me started about passion and fountainheads ..

..with every post of yours you are painting a more and more prominent picture of an ugly frustrated female, who lacked male attention all her life, looking for some cheap kicks at this late hour of the night.....

See Senorita, you can be insulting without being profane or resorting to hurling abuses at parents.... your girlies must be feeling uncomfortable, with you feeling so pathetic about yourself.

Accept it Senorita, now you are not enjoying this at all.

Please avoid insulting/abusing each others families. They are not involved in these discussions, why bring them in ??

Nice thought Smelly, but not all have been lucky enough to have been borne to a loving set of parents. Some hold their own parents responsible for the way they look (not that they are wrong). It's not surprising when they find hurling abuses at someone else's parents funny.

Let her live and learn....I am still hopeful. :)

Ekdum first class hain. You start reading, you don't feel like putting it down. Then you want to read the next one and so on. Its nothing but addiction. Of course it is supposed to be for children, but adults enjoy it equally. Why do you think I am behaving like a kid on this board?

I am addicted to reading and I started reading Harry Potter because I had nothing else to read on that day. That was the beginning and I am desperately waiting for the new one to come out.

I read it when i was in the 3rd yr of college...and for that month it virtually took precedence over all other pursuits...used to carry it over to the class and the dining hall and the canteen and wherever I roamed...what in particular took my fancy is that long winded speech by Howard Roarke (or was it someboy else??) in the intial phase - a 2-3 pgs long narrative that completely had me bamboozled!!!!!!!!!!!

I can list the favorite books I have read through different stages of my life.

Started off with Chandoba, Kishor and Champak in school to improve my Marathi (despite being a Maharashtrian) in a English medium school.

In school we had a wonderful library where I read The Secret Seven, Famous Five, The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew

Along with these, I also followed and read P.L.Deshpande, Acharya Atre and Ganpat Patil and some other Marathi literature.

Marathi also had some good detective and crime series by Gurunath Naik, Baba Arnalkar, Sharadchandra Walimbe and others. A Marathi magazine called Dakshata was my favorite for police and other crime stories.

Then went on to Alistair McClean with all his classics like Guns of Banavrone, Where Eagles Dare.....

Later on started with Len Deighton, Fredrick Forsyth and Robert Ludlum, Jack Higgins, Jeffrey Archer, Lawrence Sanders, Ken Follet,.....

Today I have been reading Micheal Crichton, John Grisham, James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark and some others.

I have read some non-fiction like Chariots of the Gods - its about humans being from another planet, etc. Contact by Carl Sagan, Jonathon Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach.

I could never digest Ayn Rand who always thought that she was the ideal and prefect person and the whole world around us is crazy!

Then I like comedy works by George Carlin, D.L. Hughley and Chris Rock.

They publish religious books of superb quality - Ramayana , Mahabharat and various other anecdotes from the vast hindu mythology.

They make a very good read and you also get to imbibe a lot of info abt hinduism as such

Gaban was too good - a truly moving narrative. Infact short stories by Premchand like 'bade bhaisaheb' and 'soze vatan'
enthrall much more.

Nandini , I'd turned off my PM facility - have turned it back on again - try sending one now.

Difficult to choose a single one from so many.

100 Years of Solitude (anything by Marquez)
Crime & Punishment + The Idiot - Dostoevsky
Catch-22
Thus Spake Zarathustra

Mostly like to read plays -

Shakespeare (he rules!!!)
Rhinoceros
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are dead
Waiting for Godot
Marat/Sade

But the best are Marathi plays. I'll grab anything written by Vijay Tendulkar. Desis who haven't read Silence! The Court is in Session and Giddh are missing something.
Elkunchwar, too, is awesome.

Haven't read much of Hindi apart from Rakesh and Dharmaveer Bharati. Want to lay my hands on Kabir and Habib Tanveer. Anybody in Bay Area knows where these are available?

BTW, anybody here find Dilip Chitre interesting?

I am talking about a different book...thomas paine dealt with chritianity & its flaws in his book, which obviously is of no interest for me. Existentialism makes more sense to me....;)

The Age of Reason (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0141185287/o/qid=990262320/sr=2-4/202-7841287-0941428)

yup read zen, though prefer the next one "Lila". You?

I think it's almost impossible to come up with a one or two books/authors that are my favorites - depends on my mood and/or the time of day :)
Anywayz here are some of my favorites in no particular order

Humor - PG Wodehouse and Terry Pratchett. Cervantes for Don Quioxte (The story goes he was getting paid by the word, which explains some crazy tangents)

SciFi/Fantasy - Asimov (Foundation Series), Gregory Benford, Herbert (Dune) and of course Tolkien

Russians (I count them as a seperate genre :) ) - Dosteyevsky - Brothers Karamazov in particular, and Gogol

Kafka - for creating the most haunting atmospheres - even filtered through a translator.

Camus, Steinbeck, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Arthur Miller- for empathy and understanding

Nietzsche - for raw power

Shakespeare - no pidgeon hole for this guy - but I'll put him under psychology

Sadly I don't have any Indian authors on this list - not because theyre not deserving but because Im lacking. In general most european languages seem to survive translation but the cultural divide is too much for most eastern languages. I can read halting hindi and punjabi but it's way too much of an effort - if anyone has some suggestions for good translations (having read both the original and the translation) - I'd love to hear about it

Neither actually. As a juxtaposition between East & West, Zen was okay otherwise wasn't much to it. Don't even remember much about these books now. Read them a long long time ago.

Umm...lila is nothing like that...and zen was not just a mix of east & west. That is more done be frijtof & zukav...zen was more about a soul's pursuit of truth and the travails....

Umm only thing in indian languages i read was ramayana (the valimiki version), they are tough to find. Like all the other losers, i have to read the english versions of indian works :) You can check out "philosophies of india" by Heinrich Zimmer. I found it pretty good ....

Most of the Michael Critchton novels.

20,000 leagues under the sea, Time machine, A journey to the centre of the earth by Jules Verne.

'Treasure Island' by R.L. Stevenson

And then of course as someone said some books are to be swallowed , in that category, I'd put sidney sheldon and fredrick forsyth at the top.

Don't know about the bra/penus thing.
But chariots is written by erich von daniken.
daniken puts forth the theory that earth was visited by aliens some hundred years ago. He justifies this theory with evidence related ancient sculptures, cities. He even goes on to say that we are descendants of these alien visitors.
