Public Health authorities are closely monitoring the condition of a Thai woman suspected to be suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome after returning from Hong Kong.

Diseases Control Department director-general Charal Trinvuthiphong said yesterday the woman was suffering from high fever and other symptoms associated with SARS. She was sent directly from Don Muang Airport to Nopparat Ratchathani hospital in Min Buri on her return from Hong Kong on Wednesday, and is now in quarantine under close medical supervision.

Dr Charal emphasised it had not yet been confirmed what illness she had.

The Public Health Ministry is also in close contact with people who returned recently from South China, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

``Authorities were unable to isolate all patients with suspected symptoms because some threatened to sue the immigration department, saying human rights were being violated,'' Dr Charal said.

The World Health Organisation yesterday identified the virus causing SARS as from the paramyxoviridae family, which also includes viruses causing mumps and measles.

Research teams at two laboratories in Germany and Hong Kong detected particles of the virus in their preliminary tests _ a major step forward in efforts to pinpoint the causative agent and develop a vaccine.

Previous tests at top laboratories failed to detect any known bacteria or virus, including influenza which is recognised as a cause of pneumonia and respiratory illnesses.

The WHO said further studies were needed.

To date, the illness has been reported in Hong Kong, Canada, China, Germany, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam. Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore remained the most affected countries, the WHO said. Fatal cases include five in Hong Kong, two in Canada and two in Vietnam.
