Good news .. India is going to field a full side. Apparently the bookies gave the go ahead to the team to sign the documents.

Now, does anybody know who has the broadcast rights for this tournament in the US. Sony has the worldwide rights, but I dont think they are going to show it here for free (on Sony TV). Dish network/Kelly have not announced their telecast plans yet. Anyone have any information on this??

OK then .. I'll reply to myself ..

Dish network announces the ODI package for the ICC Champions trophy .. of course they had to wait till the Indian Cricketers signed the contract ..

Now heres the problem - 200 bucks for the package. India plays 2 matches (luckily both on weekends). even if they make the finals, that will be 4 matches I will watch for 200 bucks - 50 bucks a match. This is still ridiculous. I think these guys are getting too greedy. The old 20 bucks per match was much better, and I believe, in the long run, they will make more money from that pricing scheme.

The first ever third umpire LBW decision was given in this match

Shoaib Malik, offie turned top order batsman became a part of history when he missed one from Chaminda Vaas and was rapped on the pad. Umpire Daryl Harper, in the new powers vested in him by the ICC, referred the matter to third umpire Rudi Koertzen. After a delay that was a touch longer than the 20 seconds the ICC suggested such matters would take, the finger went up. Slow motion replays showed that the ball pitched in line with the stumps and that is all the third umpire can rule on. Whether the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps, being one of Vaas' benders, is still a matter of debate.

Shoaib Malik lbw b Vaas 1 (with assistance from Harper/Koertzen)

is an entry that will be remembered for a time to come.

Is this is a good or bad thing for cricket? What do you think?

LBW's are bad for cricket period..

Infact I think all kinds of OUT are bad for cricket.. they should not have stumps and all catches should be banned and without stumps runout ka sawaal hi nahi uth-ta.

I think it is good ....It will reduce the scope of a person given LBW
wrongly to a great extent...Only things which go against it are reduction of human factor in the game and reduction of speed of the game.

i think its a good development.. it happens so many times that a batsman is given out and the tv replays clearly show that the ball wud have gone down the leg or the ball had pitched outside leg. no more of this i hope..

umpire in the middle will still be the best judge for something like if the ball had hit the bat bfore it hit the pad.. but on the whole i think it causes no harm ..

nayasavera
September 13th, 2002, 06:21 AM
i have always had a question abt the lbw rules..

why is a batsman not given out when the ball pitches outside leg turns enough and hits the batsman's pad right in front of wickets ? i know its a rule.. but what can be the logic behind this rule? i find it unfair to the bowlers. i called ravi shastri once on a show and asked him the question and all he said that it was this way to discourage negative bowling tactics.

any other thoughts.. ??

smellyfinger

Nayasavera

Well, the third umpire can only judge whether the ball pitched in line with the stumps. Where it is going to go still depends on the guy in the middle. So , in essence, the guy in the middle thinks "the ball was going to hit the stumps, but I am not sure whether it actually pitched in line with the stumps". Only then will he ask for a 3rd umpire call.

Yes, that is the precise reason. It is very annoying to play at a constant line outside leg stump turning in. That is what Giles has been trying to do to Tendulkar in the last 2 series. He has been frustrating him. In tests he can just kick the ball away. But in ODIs he has to play at that. I like that rule. Its the other rule I dont understand .. why, if the ball hits you on the pad outside line of offstump, but would go ahead and hit the stumps anyway, is it not LBW?

nayasavera
September 13th, 2002, 07:38 AM
if the ball hits the pad outside off, then the batsman may be given out if no shot is offered.. i remember mohinder was given out once even when his left foot was almost a meter away from the stumps..

for the leg side rule, yeah u r right.. if people start bowling a consistent line ouside leg then this rule makes sense.. but the occasional good deliveries also go unrewarded..

smellyfinger
September 13th, 2002, 07:41 AM
People like Shane warne would be unplayable .. they would bowl from wide around the wicket and get the ball to turn almost at right angles to the pitch .. :D

I believe the rule has been revised in recent years for outside the off .. i dont think it matters whether there was a shot offered or not. I could be wrong though.

Law 36: Leg Before Wicket
1. Out L.B.W.
The Striker shall be out L.B.W. in the circumstances set out below:-
(a) Striker Attempting to Play the Ball

The Striker shall be out L.B.W. if he first intercepts with any part of his person, dress or equipment a fair ball which would have hit the wicket and which has not previously touched his bat or a hand holding the bat, provided that:-

(i) The ball pitched, in a straight line between wicket and wicket or on the off side of the Striker's wicket, or was intercepted full pitch.

and

(ii) The point of impact is in a straight line between wicket and wicket, even if above the level of the bails.

(b) Striker Making No Attempt to Play the Ball

The Striker shall be out L.B.W. even if the ball is intercepted outside the line of the off-stump, if, in the opinion of the Umpire, he has made no genuine attempt to play the ball with his bat, but has intercepted the ball with some part of his person and if the other circumstances set out in (a) above apply.

cool .. thanks for the correction .. it just seems that there is a lot of padding outside offstump, even to offspinners. Maybe hiding your bat behind your pad is considered an "attempt to play the ball" :)

after a long time the indian team is fighting under pressure. previously batting first and being 87/5 would have seen the team score at most 220 or 230 runs, but thats no longer the case. i hope bcci or selectors dont mess with this combination till the world cup.

there are talks that kaif needs to bat higher up the order. i think he is the perfect number 7 batsman for india, as he negates any screw ups of the top order batsmen. what do you guys think? should he bat higher up or remain at #7?

He is playing well at number 7 so that shouldnt be changed.
Shouldnt try to fix something that isnt broken.
Well if he goes on like this and his reputation keeps increasing then the opposing teams will have to worry about

1) Sehwag at the top order
2) Sachin in the middle order, and even after dismissing these two they cant be comfortable coz
3) Kaif and Yuvraj in lower middle order is also there to think about.

Upar se Saurav and Dravid to hain hee.

We just need better performance from our bowlers. Zaheer is doing well baaki bowlers ko achcha perform karna padega.

One question which will be ringing now in rival teams' thinktanks is that what sort of total is big enough for India ...350?400?
Well, the sort of Form Indian batsmen are in right now it seems they can successfully chase 350...

Are yaar bowling ko to maine bhi itna kharaab nahi socha tha. Harbhajan meri team mein hai aur 110 points leke baitha hua hai lekin usne poore tournament mein ek bhi wicket nahi liya hai :( and Kumble is also proving to be ineffective. And these are slow turners of Sri Lanka.

But seriously, pehle opposing captain had just to think of getting rid of Sachin and they knew that Indians would cave in.

Ab ehle Sehwag ka socho, fir Ganguly ka socho aur ye sochte sochte ye bhi socho ki Sachin ko to abhi aane ka hai aur Sachin ke baad Kaif aur Yuvi bhi hain. :D aur agar we loose early wickets, then Dravid is there at number 5 ;)

Now nobody should ever again doubt about trying to promote Sachin to open. Sehwag and Ganguly opening is formidable and Sachin coming at number 4 gives a balance to the batting line-up.
Also I dont think we should think about getting a regular keeper instead of Dravid. Dravid basically had an off-day yesterday thats all. I think he is doing better keeping than people like Vijay Yadav etc who were also good batsmen.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention another thing for those who didnt see the game.
8 years back in the Hero cup semi-final against South Africa Tendulkar bowled a tight final over to restrict SA and give India victory.
Yesterday Sehwag bowled in another semi-final, against SA and again very tightly at the death to give Indian victory.
How many more dimensions to the similarity or coincidences between these two are there? :p

Srinath replaces Nehra for Champions Trophy final
CricInfo - 27 September 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Veteran medium-pacer Javagal Srinath is set to replace Ashish Nehra for the final of the Champions Trophy 2002 which India will play on Sunday.

In an about turn from their earlier position the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acceded to the team's wishes and recalled Srinath, who is currently playing for Leicestershire in England.

Newly appointed secretary of the BCCI, S. K. Nair said in a statement that the Board had agreed to the replacement and this was okayed by the again newly formed selection committee. The International Cricket Council too gave the necessary permission to the Indian team.

Just recently, the chairman of the selection committee, former Karnataka and India cricketer Brijesh Patel, had said that he would try to persuade Srinath to change his mind and return to both Test and one-day cricket.

The honorary secretary of the BCCI also confirmed that Srinath had agreed to leave England immediately and fly to Colombo in order to reach in time to play the final.

Nehra injured his bowling hand when he attempted a run out off his bowling against South Africa. The Delhi medium-pacer split the webbing between his index and middle fingers and required five stitches.
